Nathan’s Famous Grants Imagination Playgrounds, $2,000 of Groceries from A&P to Carey Gardens and O’Dwyer GardensNathan’s Famous Grants Imagination Playgrounds, $2,000 of Groceries from A&P to Carey Gardens and O’Dwyer Gardens

Nathan’s Famous, the world-renowned hot dog company, today celebrated leaders in the Coney Island community, yesterday, who make active play possible as part of it’s Ready. Set. PLAY. initiative with national non-profit KaBOOM!.

Bruce Miller, Senior Director of Operations for Nathan’s Famous, officially unveiled two Imagination Playground systems that the company granted to Carey Gardens and O’Dwyer Gardens this past April, and presented representatives from each with a $1,000 gift card to The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company’s family of supermarkets, specifically Pathmark and Waldbaum’s, to be used for groceries, courtesy of Nathan’s Famous.

Nathan’s Famous presented representatives from Carey Gardens and O’Dwyer Gardens with A&P gift cards worth $1,000 each towards the purchase of groceries, courtesy of Nathan’s Famous.

Nathan’s Famous has been committed to helping rebuild communities impacted in 2012 by Hurricane Sandy. These Imagination Playground grants provide an emotional, mental and physical outlet as the superstorm’s destruction has limited recreational space for the children of the community.

“Children living in Coney Island have had few opportunities to play and limited recreational space since the storm, and these Imagination Playground systems will bring the kids one step closer to having the childhood they deserve,” said Wayne Norbitz, President of Nathan’s Famous.

“I, along with other members of the Coney Island Alliance, want to ensure that our community is healthy and thriving,” added Norbitz. “Providing a recreational outlet, for both mind and body, is essential for the growth of our youth. We cannot thank the kind people at Carey Gardens and O’Dwyer Gardens enough as the two organizations have an incredible impact on the development of our area’s youth, championing both physical and emotional growth.”

Using Imagination Playground blocks, kids can build a new world every day. Because Imagination Playground is child-directed and open-ended, it encourages self-expression through deep, joyful play.

Traditional playgrounds consist primarily of fixed equipment, such as slides, monkey bars and teeter-totters, all of which focus on developing children’s gross motor skills. Imagination Playgrounds are made up of loose parts that prompt children to transform their environment and create a play space of their own.

“We are thrilled that HeartShare St. Vincent Services was nominated for the Imagination Playground experience, which further enhances the physical, emotional and social benefits of at-risk children and teens participating in our youth programs,” said HeartShare St. Vincent’s Services (HSVS) Executive Director Dawn Saffayeh. “We are also incredibly grateful for the $2,000 donation, as our children often enjoy nutritional meals and snacks at our after-school programs.”

HSVS, an affiliate of HeartShare Human Services of New York, opened its Carey Gardens and O’Dwyer Cornerstone Programs last year after displacement of its Coney Island youth programs following Superstorm Sandy.

The Ready. Set.PLAY. initiative is a partnership created in 2014 by Nathan’s Famous with KaBOOM!. Ready. Set. PLAY. celebrates play and the local leaders who are making active play possible in communities across the nation.

Nathan’s Famous was founded almost 100 years ago in Coney Island, a popular New York City amusement and leisure destination.  Nathan’s Famous prides itself on its great quality, unmistakable taste, and a passion for family fun and community support.

Nathan’s Famous is a licensed brand of Smithfield Foods.

From Striver to Thriver: Cancer Survivor Teaches Others

Cancer survivor Melanie Young says during the years after her treatment ended, still grieving the loss of her doting father and feeling burnt out from overwork as a PR agency owner, she realized her emotional healing was going to take much longer than the physical. “I wondered if the best years of my life were behind me or the worst years,” she says. “I felt stuck and not sure what direction to take to move forward. I had to learn to reframe, reconnect with myself and reset my intentions.”

In her new book, “Fearless, Fabulous You! Lessons on Living Life on Your Terms” (Cedar Fort/Nov. 2014/$12.99), Young outlines Five Restorative Paths, in 25  essays and 125 fearless lessons, for learning to get your life back on track and rediscover joy and purpose.

Hot Butterbeer Comes to Universal Orlando

While the book is based on her own journey from “striver to thriver,” Young says it will help anyone facing a challenge, setback or emotional road block. “I want to help you avoid emotional burnout and take your life from fizzle to sizzle to reignite your vision of living life on your terms,” said Young.

Young’s 5 Rs include
Recharge. Center yourself by making your well-being a priority. Make smarter choices to improve your physical and emotional health, including diet, exercise, stress management and revaluing in your self-worth.

Release. Let go of anything that brings you down emotionally. This may include negative thoughts, toxic people or a stressful job or any other situation that could be detrimental to your mental or physical well-being.
Reconnect. Take stock of your skills and talents and think about how to retool them in ways that give you joy and renewed purpose.

Reframe. Take a negative situation. Turn it around in your mind and look at it in a new way. What can you learn from it to make a better life?

Reclaim. Learn to define and live your life by your own standards of happiness, success and who you want to be, and not by anyone else’s criteria.

Now a health coach, Young hosts the weekly radio show “Fearless Fabulous You!” on W4WN — the Women 4 Women Network featuring inspiring women and health and wellness experts. Her first book, “Getting Things Off My Chest: A Survivor’s Guide to Staying Fearless & Fabulous in the Face of Breast Cancer” (Cedar Fort, 2013) is the recipient of the 2014 International Book Award for cancer health topics. Help out The Walt Disney Birthplace during An Evening with Imagineer Bob Gurr on Nov. 21 in Celebration, FL

You are cordially invited to join us for an exclusive evening with Disney Imagineer Bob Gurr! This event will continue our campaign for Phase One of The Walt Disney Birthplace restoration! This special night will include special guests, Magic, Memories, and a rare opportunity to meet a true Disney Legend! There are an extremely limited number of tickets available for this private affair, and we will be offering some unique opportunities which will only be available at this event. Don’t miss out on this one-of-a-kind night, and the opportunity to meet a true Magic Maker!

WE CAN ONLY SAVE WALT’S LEGACY WITH YOUR HELP

The Walt Disney BirthplaceIn a quiet residential neighborhood just outside of downtown Chicago, IL, stands a modest family home on the corner of Tripp Avenue and Palmer Street. This house was designed and built by Flora and Elias Disney, Walt and Roy Disney’s mother and father. Walt, Roy and Ruth Disney were born in this home that seven Disney family members lived together in.

Over the last century, the home has changed hands several times and has been added to and altered significantly. These “renovations” have almost completely covered up the authentic details of the house.

We have already lost too many buildings that were an incredibly important part of Walt Disney’s history. And that is why we are striving to restore it to its original state, honoring and preserving the home for generations to come.

Our project is about more than just a restoration. It is also an opportunity to research this period of the Disney family history which has sparked a larger vision for the home beyond the restoration.

Each day, we gain new insights into how and why Walt and Roy became the men they were. We are learning how their childhood, family and parents impacted their lives and laid a foundation that nurtured collaboration, creativity, and innovation.

With our team of project advisors, we are formalizing strategies on how we can empower today’s families to nurture and raise the creative thinkers of tomorrow.

Two types of admission are available:
