Celebrating America’s National Parks with a Small Ship Cruise

Small ship cruise expert AdventureSmith Explorations (http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/) in the spirit of 2016’s National Park Centennial Celebration offers the most unique way to experience our National Parks: cruise a park.

While Alaska has the whale’s share of cruises in National Parks, and thus choices of ship size and amenities, the San Juan Islands and Oregon’s Columbia River are key players as well.

Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve covers over three million acres with open ocean and fjord coastlines spanning most of its perimeter. This means that the small vessels that AdventureSmith Explorations employs access many of the coves and landings around hundreds of miles. Examples of itineraries here are three eight-day programs: Exploring Muir’s Wilderness on the 84-guest Safari Endeavor; Northern Passages & Glacier Bay on the 60-guest Wilderness Adventurer, 74-guest Wilderness Explorer or 76-guest Wilderness Discoverer; and Discoverers Glacier Country on the 22-guest Safari Quest, the 36-guest Safari Explorer, the 60-guest Wilderness Adventurer or the 84-guest Safari Endeavour. Itineraries have themed departures the week of Aug. 25, 2016 celebrating the Centennial, with commemoration gifts, guest speakers, evening onboard presentations focused on the history of the National Parks, surprise birthday celebrations and special presentations by Park Rangers on board while in Glacier Bay.

For those that want to see as much of Glacier Bay National Park as possible on a cruise, the six-day Glacier Bay Adventure Cruise is the only Inside Passage small ship cruise that spends most of its itinerary inside the park. The itinerary travels from waterfall-laden Geike Inlet to the barren mountain faces of the East and West arms of Glacier Bay National Park, then routes outside the park to Point Adolphus for whale watching. Hundreds of miles of glacial fjords are here for kayaking, hiking and small ship cruising. The base of exploration is the historic 12-passenger small ship M/V Sea Wolf, owned and operated by Alaskans.

Kenai Fjords National Park, on the edge of the Kenai Peninsula south of Anchorage, covers an area of nearly 670,000 acres, 51 percent of which is ice. A number of lodge-based itineraries allow guests to spend ample time on the water boating through Kenai Fjords. To access most of these remote lodges, guests embark by boat from Seward on a five-hour wildlife and tidewater glacier journey. Kenai Fjords Backcountry Explorer over seven days reveals by raft and boat and on shore the many of the activities and animals on the Native-owned, 1,700-acre Pedersen Lagoon Wildlife Sanctuary. The eight-day Ultimate Alaska Adventure pairs backcountry adventure and wild Alaska by sea kayaking in Kenai Fjords National Park, a helicopter landing onto a glacial snowpack, a floatplane journey to a remote mountain lake and more.

Olympic National Park, at nearly 1 million acres along Washington’s coast, is famed for its diversity of ecosystems and rich cultural history. Olympic Wilderness & San Juan Islands is an eight-day-expedition along this coastline from the comfort of the 60-guest Wilderness Adventurer or the 76-guest Wilderness Discoverer. Kayaks and paddleboards sail aboard, allowing guests to actively explore the park’s coves and canals.

Lewis & Clark National Historical Park at Fort Clatsop in Astoria, Oregon, is a hub focusing on the lore of early explorers. Two small ship itineraries visiting here herald the legacy of two great western rivers: the Columbia and the Snake. Columbia & Snake Rivers Journey over seven days embraces culture and history with food and wine bounties of the Pacific Northwest. This trip recently acquired Food Alliance affiliation ensuring that local and sustainable are prominent in in every culinary presentation. Guests will be on board either 62-passenger National Geographic Sea Bird or 62-passenger National Geographic Sea Lion. Over eight days on Legacy of Discovery guests aboard the 88-guest S.S. Legacy that emulates a turn-of-century steamer traverse the nearly 1,000 miles of history on the Columbia River Gorge.

Some of AdventureSmith Explorations’ itineraries define remote to its core, with guests going beyond the boat, being transported to a National Park by small plane or train. There are fly-to itineraries accessing Katmai National Park including Brown Bears of Katmai, a five-day program recommended as a cruise extension. On Denali Backcountry Explorer guests explore the wilderness from a lodge deep in Denali National Park and Preserve with access that may include a bus or train from Anchorage.

Alaska Coast to Denali is a cruise-a-park highlight, visiting two national parks over seven days via boat and train. The itinerary starts with a small boat cruise into a Kenai Fjords National Park lodge, travels overland to Denali National Park and Preserve and then concludes with a scenic train ride on the Alaska Railroad to Anchorage.

Soulshine Music Presents Get The Led Out Live at Tampa theatre

Get The Led Out – dubbed by media as “The American Led Zeppelin” – is returning to Tampa for another live performance on the Theatre’s historic stage at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, March 20, 2016 presented by Soulshine Music.

Tickets are $43 and $38 (plus applicable service fees) and will go on sale at noon Friday, Nov. 20 at the Tampa Theatre Box Office, located at 711 N. Franklin Street in downtown Tampa, and online at www.TampaTheatre.org

 0000000000Koda Picks Harvick

From the bombastic and epic to the folky and mystical, Get The Led Out (GTLO) captures the essence of the recorded music of Led Zeppelin and brings it to the concert stage. The Philadelphia-based group consists of six veteran musicians intent on delivering Led Zeppelin live, like you’ve never heard before. With the multi-instrumentalists at their disposal, GTLO re-creates the songs in all their depth and glory with the studio overdubs that Zeppelin themselves never performed. Without wigs or fake English accents, GTLO brings what the audience wants: a high energy Zeppelin concert with an honest, heart-thumping intensity.

The 2+ hour set spans the career of the legendary British super group, with a strong focus on the early years. They also touch on the deeper cuts that were seldom, if ever, heard in concert and include a special “acoustic set” with Zep favorites such as “Tangerine” and “Battle of Evermore” performed in their original instrumentation with guest singer Diana DeSantis. Their approach to performing this hallowed catalogue is not unlike a classical performance. “Led Zeppelin are sort of the classical composers of the rock era,” says lead vocalist Paul Sinclair. “I believe that 100 years from now, they will be looked at as the Bach or Beethoven of our time. As cliché as it sounds, their music is timeless.”

For those interested in discovering the Buddhist tradition, lush landscapes, and welcoming locals, Laos paves the way for an awe-inspiring winter getaway. Bun Pha Wet is a month-long annual Buddhist holiday celebrating the incarnation of the Buddha as Prince Vessantara, an embodiment of perfect charity and compassion. In temples, monks recite the story of the Prince from palm-leaf books accompanied by traditional rituals, dances, and dramatic performances. It is also a particularly auspicious time to be ordained as a monk. All Buddhist men are expected to live as monks sometime throughout their lives, and this rite of passage is celebrated with vibrant enthusiasm during the Bun Pha Wet holiday. The people of Laos are warm and receptive, eager to share their traditions with visitors. This experience pairs perfectly with an excursion elsewhere in Southeast Asia, from the ruins of Angkor Wat to a secluded island retreat off the coast of Thailand.

If the vibrant colors and exotic luxuries of India fit you and your loved ones’ travel fancies, perhaps a visit to Nagaland, a remote corner of northeastern India is in order. Attend the Hornbill Festival (early December) to experience exuberant displays of song, dance, food and customs from the area’s astounding variety of traditional tribal groups. Even seasoned travelers to India have never seen anything like this—we promise! Despite the remote location, guests can relax in comfort at an ultra-luxurious, safari-style camp erected near the festival grounds. Perhaps end the experience with a cruise on the sacred Brahmaputra River through the misty hills and tea plantations of Assam. Or dive headfirst into the colorful chaos of India with a few days in Kolkata, the original capital of the British Raj and a hub of Indian intellectual and artistic culture.

To make giving the gift of travel even easier, Asia Transpacific Journeys now offers gift cards so you can present your loved ones with a customized voucher to use during their overseas adventure. Newest Audio Guide from Just Ahead Explores Rocky Mountain NP

Just Ahead (http://www.justahead.com/), synonymous with award-winning smartphone apps for road tripping through national parks, now offers its GPS-guided smartphone audio tour of Rocky Mountain National Park—a narrated guide to the most dramatic and unspoiled mountain landscape in the United States. It is Just Ahead’s first guide in Colorado.

The audio tour of this park — 265,600 acres of mountain splendor and dramatic roads –includes all of the park’s major paved routes and east and west approaches. The act of driving triggers this GPS-guided tour narration. After download from the Apple App Store or Google Play, this app requires no Internet connection or mobile-phone signal. Just turn it on, drive, and enjoy.

Author Mel White, highly respected author of National Geographic’s Complete National Parks of the United States, tells stories of the park’s scenic highlights, including Bear Lake, Wild Basin, the Continental Divide, the Kawaneechee Valley, and Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuously paved road in the United States (Trail Ridge is closed during the snowy months of the year, but most other roads in the park remain open). The app reveals transitions from the montane ecosystem to subalpine terrain to dramatic alpine tundra above tree line. It calls out trailheads for some of the greatest mountain hikes in the country: hikes to the Twin Sisters Peaks, the great hikes that emanate from Bear Lake, and the trail to Chasm Lake at the base of the sheer north face of Longs Peak, the park’s highest mountain at 14,259 feet.

Between jaw-dropping sights are interspersed stories about the park’s wildlife — elk, bighorn sheep, moose, black bear, coyote, mule deer, mountain lion, yellow-bellied marmot — and the best places for spotting them. The park’s history, geology and geography — think Continental Divide — neighboring towns, and cool places to camp and stay are folded into the narrative, along with pointers on best hikes, trout fishing, birding, and photo opps.

As visitors climb through ponderosa pine forests to the montane ecosystem to subalpine terrain and finally up to dramatic alpine tundra above tree line Just Ahead shares stories of the American Indians, early settlers, the Civilian Conservation Corps and the park’s famous aspen groves. See: http://www.justahead.com/tours/rocky-mountain-national-park/

Just Ahead utilizes GPS technology to know exactly where drivers are on the road, and delivers stories and maps relevant to their exact location. The groundbreaking app points out not-to-miss features while also helping drivers avoid getting lost. It suggests directions and tells drivers why they should turn or not, what they should do after a turn, and the best direction to take if there are multiple route options.

A satisfied user had this to say about the app and tour guide, “LOVE this idea! It’s like you went into my brain and pulled out something I never even knew that I wanted but now can’t think to live without.”
